All QT versions including 6.x will work on 8.1. The trick is that the newer QT versions require the carbonlib extension. It was added as of OS 8.6 and can be downloaded from Apple. (It's a free download. and Version1.6 is the newest) Drop the extension in your 8.1 extensions folder and restart. (carbonlib also allows some "OS 8.6/9.x" apps to run on 8.1)
If you'd prefer an older QT, 4.1.2 for PPC with 7.5.5 or later doesn't require carbonlib and is available for free download at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120082 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120067 has 4.0.3 for 680xx Macs, if anyone needs a version for a pre PPC Mac.
