Hi all:

I'm a brand new member of this group, and an old
PowerComputing mac user.

This may be completely out of topic, but maybe you
folks can help me out here.

I have to hook up an old Xante 8100, a Postscript 1200
dpi 11 x 17 workhorse (worth as much as a GMC Tracker
when it was new) that even has an OSX printer driver
available that I've downloaded.

My problem is that the printer is serial/local talk
only, no ethernet, and of course no USB... I have
firewire, USB, ethernet, etc. on my G4 that seriously
wants to talk to this printer...

Asante makes a ethernet to serial bridge that does not
support this printer. As far as I know there is NO
bridge that does, which leaves me to using the
Powermac...

I have 2 old mac boxes, a Power Computing 120 and an
old Apple thing of about the same speed, both of which
have ethernet that I can use as bridges, that is, I
can use them as connectors to the Xante.

I also have an Apple monitor that I can use dedicated
to configure either of these. The Power Mac is the one
I would rather use because it was the last one I used
in that era.. (it even has 64 megs of RAM!).

I don't know which of the latest systems are available
for this box, and not even sure which system is on
it... I haven't fired it up yet.

If I fire either one of these boxes up to use as a
bridge what kind of problems will I encounter,
particularly if I'm using an OSX driver from my main
computer which is running OSX 10.2.8?

Some of the problems I'm expecting are are OSX/system
7 or 8 connections, compatibility with higher protocol
ethernet vs. the old stuff, etc.

The ethernet to the box shouldn't be an issue, but how
do I use the connection to actually print from my main
computer?

Has anyone done anything like this? Any suggestions
re: where I should post the same questions perhaps on
a different forum? Any comments or suggestions besides
trashing this old beloved printer are welcome!!!

Best and Warmest Regards,

Ray
