Very strange! Are you sure your "off-the-shelf-OS8-disk" is an original Apple MacOS 8 Installdisk? If its a copy, its probably badly made. Why strange? Because: The original installdisk for the Perf. 5400/6400 came with OS 7.5.3, initialising every IDE HD I ever tried. Of all the Macs I have to maintain there are still 18 Perf./PM 5400 160/180 in use, running OS 7.5.3 or 7.6.1 or 8.1 or 8.6 or 9.1, depending of the customer's wish. I only use orig. The only possibilty I see: Your HD is not an OEM-HD or not recognised by DiskInstaller or DriveSetUp. Check ASP or open your Mac and look for details on your HD.
