For the setup you have the external box will have enough overhead. But when
you upgrade to another printer with no built-in Ethernet (or if the 1300
breaksdown and you need not be disabled by using spare with no networking)
you can just transfer the box.

Generally they work quite well. Spooling pages is what slows down the
printing so faster Macs easiliy overcome overhead issues.
