You can go to the following link and see what the net traffic is like
at any given moment.  But to answer your question about a virus, the
answer is yes.  There are currently three big viruses out there. 
MyDoomA, MyDoomB and W32/Bagle
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm You can do a google
search on any of the three viruses I've listed and you can see what
kind of damage is being done
