Well, 9.2.2 with OS9 Helper.

8.6 is pretty good on these. (I've a 5500/225 logic board in my 5400/180 chassis) System 7.6.1 would pretty much scream on one of these, but you're limited to somewhat limited software, Eudora Pro 4 vs. Eudora Pro 5, for example.

Eudora Pro 5.2 works very well. Internet Explorer, iCab, Opera 5 work well as browsers.

Tex-Edit Plus is Simple Text all grown up and mainlining steroids. Really easy to use, tons of features, very powerful. Combined with SpellTools for spell checking, there's very little you can't do with Tex-Edit Plus.

Graphic Converter will handle most of your common graphic manipulation needs. I'm using Photoshop 4 currently. It was free (found on a hard drive pulled from a Mac that was on the curb, awaiting the trash pickup) so I'm really happy with it. So far, Photoshop 4 is just fine for my needs.

(insert my usual rant about USB Overdrive and USB multibutton/scrollwheel mice here. <http://www.usboverdrive.com>)

If you can find a cheap used Sonnet Crescendo G3 upgrade card, or can afford a new one, that'll do absolute wonders for performance.

So much so, that in my case, I'm no longer actively seeking a G3 desktop machine or an iMac.
