Bill, I also have a 740, and I think you have a good idea.
When I have not used the printer for a long period of time, ie., 6 wks - the heads really get clogged and the cleaning cycle done repeatedly didn't solve the problem. A friend referred me to http://fixyourownprinter.com/. I bought a cleaning kit for about $12 that consisted of bottle of soapy solvent and a sort of eye dropper. Put a bit of the solution on the pad under the heads with the dropper and let it soak. Then run the cleaning cycle. If that still doesn't work, remove the ink cartridge and use the eye dropper to squirt the solution right through the jets (and clean up the mess afterwards), and presto - all is solved.
