Of course you CAN. To suggest otherwise is silly. You can also drop a 10-pound sledge hammer on your motherboard from 25-feet. Would I advise doing either...no.

Is it bad to plug or unplug the keyboard while the machine is running?

Only if it belongs to someone else. "Bad boy...bad boy!"

If it's your own, it's neither bad nor not bad. It's amoral.

You might be able to do it several times without damaging your computer. I'll bet there are those who have. But the odds are against you on the first attempt and they'll get you in the end. Unless all pin connections on an ADB cable are made or broken in precise synchronism, one runs the risk of voltage spikes appearing where they can do the most damage particularly if the low level (ground) line is not made first and broken last.

Even if the short interval it takes for your machine to boot is intolerable, don't take the risk. Pop down $45 for one of those switches that safely perform this function for you.
