Hi listers,

Many of the new switches (Netgear, for example) come with all the ports that 
auto-uplink.  So it really doesn't matter what cable you use, so long as it is not 
broken, it will work.

Now, as for the original question regarding this post.

I had a very similar problem on a couple of macs (a 6300 and a 5200) with a brand new 
Sonic card [yes I know these are not PCI macs], but it was a busted OS install.

After fiddling around with all sorts of things, I gave up and installed 8.5 clean and 
they worked a treat.

Is that something you could consider?
