When you're connected to the internet run QT update and click on the custom button to allow you to install additional plugins. I can't remember which one it is though-I just checked every single one. DOn't worry if you have dial-up, it'll only take 15-30 min to install all the plugins (though longer if you need to update the rest, the plugins themselves are less them 1MB total I think (about 30k each, though I can't remember totally). DivX is a free download as well, though I don't think i had it installed.

I have encountered some AVI files that Quicktime (6.4) attempts to play, but then tells me it is missing a plug-in and that it's not available for download.
What is the mysterious plug-in and how would I get it?
Unfortunately, the 'plugin' is probably Windows Media Player...:-(
sometimes you can convert them with divX
Only if they're divX-encoded AVI's...WMP will be a lot more specific about what format the AVI is.
This generally pisses me off about QT lately, though...*older* versions played a lot more formats :-(
If the QT update tells you the server is unavailible, try again a couple of times. It shoulds eventually work.
The option to add in the plugins can also be accessed by selecting the "Install additional third-party software" option when you launch QT update (from within the QT settings control panel or tab of the system prefs in OS X)
