DivX is only a solution when it comes to playing DivX encoded video, though
the DivX player can use QT to play other formats. For example, if you've
notice the Indeo extensions in your ext folder, that is another kind of "codec"
that might be used in an .avi file.

This is from Apple:
"AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a
container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and
video data.

AVI DOES NOT specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and
video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for
COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks
that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous
codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's
features using plug-ins or third-party installations.

Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are
available from the QuickTime website
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/specifications.html.

(This is a pretty big list for QT6.)

Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to
compress an audio or video track:

1. Open the file in QuickTime Player.
2. Choose Movie > Get Movie Properties.
3. Choose Sound Track or Video Track from the left pop-up menu in the
Properties window.
4. Choose Format from the right pop-up menu. The Format section shows the
codec.

If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with
QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media
encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see
if a QuickTime version is available."

DivX is becoming common on the web and I believe they are an Apple partner.
>From the DivX site, you'll learn that DivX is a codec -- the player will not
open other kinds of .AVI files EXCEPT if it does so through QT --
>From the web site:
"The DivX codec is a patent-pending, MPEG-4 based video compression
technology that can shrink digital video to sizes small enough to be transported over
the Internet, while maintaining high visual quality. To view the compressed
version of the video, you need a media player designed to play DivX-encoded
content."
