OT: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, by Mel Gibson. Opening day, first public audience in San Diego.
As a movie commentator in college, I simply can not refrain from these comments on this film of their time. I do not engage in the obvious question of religion, be it good or bad, accurate or not, as it is far too questionable for this short comment on this list of friends sharing a common interest. FROM other sources, we conclude the activities of Jesus alienated the elders and threaten the Jewish community. This was not to be tolerated, even when done by a fellow Jew. Dissatisfied with the refusal of the Roman powers to do the deed sought, shut up this Jesus person, their first attempt resulted in only a damn good beating, so bad that it even offended the Romans. Unrelenting, even in light of this terrible beating, the Jewish led elders insisted on nothing less than crucifixion. THERE are some issues: 1. Beaten so badly, the trauma and loss of blood would surly have rendered Jesus unconscious. 2. The cross is made of cut wood trunk and held together by well made nails that are driven in place with 10 pound sledge hammer heads. I have experience with wood and conclude, the cross could not have been carried by two men, let alone a well beaten Jesus. 3. As the Resurrection is portrayed, all the damage to His face and body are gone, except the hole in His arm where the nail was pounded into the cross. If God had cleared the skin of damage, it stands to reason, He would also have removed the nail hole. 4. Jewish Anti-defamation league should not feel threatened, since this was an act of the times, their times. 5. This is now, and we see JFK and MLK suffering from similar, but different retaliations. We see that the world has forgiven the German and Japanese for their participation in historic events. 6. Lessons to be learned are that in some parts of the world, a damn good beating is well received and has reduced crime enormously, but in America, going to jail is a piece of cake. Thank you Mr. Gibson. See this movie for what it is, live your life as best as you can.
