I think you are talking about playing through your browser. WMP is the
solution for streaming files, but be aware that v.7 and above play less formats
than previous versions. If you can download the AVI file, you may be able to
play it by opening from within QTPlayer. However some formats require QT Pro.

Some files download and some play through a browser plugin. Most of the time it's automatic so I'm not sure that it matters except in those instances where the file is supposed to play through a plugin that is not present. Then you might have to download it manually to play it.


In my frenzy of experimentation with all of this, I've found some files are just a pointer to the actual content. If you do need to do this and are having trouble, make sure you are getting the actual file to play.
