Recently, however, when I used a newer version XPost Facto 2.25 it boots a
bit then just hangs short of the splash
screen that says what is loaded with the spinning ball....
Whenever you chage XPF versions you need to reinstall XpostFacto's 
proprietary extensions.  Select the options in the menu to reinstall 
extensions and the other things there.
