Here's a good one to ponder:

I've been wondering for a long time about whether one can successfully use
EDO SIMMs (Extended Data Out) in a 1st generation PPC Mac.
I know that EDO SIMMs will function in a 6100, 7100 or 8100,
but their EDO capability is not utilized by the memory controller,
so the benefits of EDO are not achieved.

Apple has a Tech Note which says what you've written above. EDO works fine in the x100 series but it is treated as FPM RAM.

I've discovered that there IS a 1st-generation PowerMac that has
an EDO-capable memory controller!!!!
It's the WGS 9150 (Apple Workgroup Server 9150).
It was the first Mac of any kind to have an EDO controller.

What is your source for that info? The memory controller on the 9150 is the same as on the other x100 machines, so that would be very surprising. I suppose they might have done something in the ROM and the ROM for the 9150 is slightly different, but I think support for EDO features would require hardware changes in the memory controller.

Lastly, if the EDO feature is non-functional because of the non-EDO RAM on
the mainboard, can I REPLACE the mainboard RAM with EDO chips and
thus make the 9150's EDO feature fully functional???

If your original premise is correct, you should be able to replace the RAM chips. However, there are a bunch of chips to replace (16?) and you would need to find EDO chips with the same package size and organization (e.g. 4M X 1 bit).

If you've got the time it could be a fun project, but I am dubious about the original premise.
