>Is a Seagate Cheetah 18 GB LVD Ultra SCSI 2 10K RPM drive fully >compatible and useable as-is (no special controller) on an 8500 or >9500 Powermac?
LVD/SE drives are implicitly compatible with SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 controllers, when used with an adapter which converts the 16-bit LVD/SE bus to the 8-bit host bus, such as those found on the 8500/9500 and later machines. The drive is capable of detecting when an SE bus is being employed, and to automatically reconfigure itself for such a host bus. Of course, best performance is achieved (perhaps 4 times the throughput, more or less) with a purpose-built controller. ATTO/Apple is one example of a purpose-built controller, and in one configuration, not necessarily an Apple configuration, this controller supports two independent wide, high-speed SCSI controllers, with both dual 68-pin ribbon connectors internally and dual 68-pin VHDCI cable connectors externally. Cheetah drives are hot runners, and should be installed in a way which ensures proper cooling. When so installed, these drives are exceptionally reliable. Specifically, a 68- to 50-pin adapter should be selected to as to ensure proper drive cooling. However, it is always best to operate these drives in 16-bit mode, at the expense of an additional PCI card, but which eliminates the need for drive adapters. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
