Actually, Dan, I guess I'm one of those.  I have used it for about 4+ years
and not had those kinds of troubles at all.  The only question I had was
about vulnerability (which supposedly was eliminated by the patch). Since OE
for Macs was written FOR Macs, perhaps that makes a difference.  I have
Eudora, but do not like it. Earthlink is my server, but I don't like their
mail system, either, even their Web Mail is not much to my liking but handy
when I am away from my own computer.
