(heck, I used to work on the Ink Jet drivers for HP a decade or so ago)
ooooh. So it was your fault the DeskWriters were so reliable! :) I miss my original DeskWriter! Bought it in '92 and it was in continual use until just a few months ago. Never had a problem with it.
problems with the ink drying out, etc. when not used for a few weeks.
Us too! Not so bad on the HP's, but horrible on the Epsons. Even half a dozen cleaning cycles sometimes doesn't fix it! I put a cron-type job on our house router/server, to print a page once every four days when people are away.
not do much photo printing, or much color of any kind, so the color ink would dry out,
We added an Epson C60 to our network last year. (hey, it was <$50 after a bunch of rebates). Just discovered a gotcha: We use it just for b&w, but of course it won't work without a color cart too. Turns out it has some kind of cartridge life timer in it?! When the color cart hit exactly 6 months old - the printer stopped and yelled ink out. Even tho the cart said there was lots of ink, the printer refused to operate (per the manual) until we put a fresh cart in.
