what's this? Beta? Zeta?

Alpha. Not to be confused with the inferior greek letters. :)

Alpha is a text editor, with a Tcl Engine. It's kindof a modern / logical extension of the Emacs idea (if you're familiar with it's ITS-TECO -> Lisp machinations); a fully programmable editor. The basic text editor is very simple. The Tcl (pronounced 'tickle') Engine lets Alpha do a LOT of complicated things -- modes for each programming language, etc. And if you don't like the Tcl code that comes with it, you can add other people's or modify it to suit yourself.
