My Epson 1200 also does this sometimes; black ink smears will appears along
one edge of the paper (I don't recall which side, but only one side).
Doesn't happen all the time.  My guess was that the paper was curling
slightly, allowing the ink carrier to rub over the paper as the print head
passed by, rubbing some ink onto the edge of paper and smearing it a bit
along part of that edge.  Just a guess on my part.
