I bought a dual reader from SanDisk, which says it is compatible

If I unplug the reader, the computer starts up just fine.

Plug it in, restart it, and the Finder quits again.

Any ideas what I should do?

My Mac is basically a G3-upgraded 7600 with a dual FireWire/USB card.
The USB has worked fine for a MacAlly trackball and my Palm hookup.

The best thing would be to get a card reader that doesn't require any driver. These devices use the mass storage driver that is built in to the OS (I'm pretty sure it's standard in OS 9.1).

As to making your's work my only suggestion is to re-order the driver in the startup process. Locate the driver in the Extensions folder (hopefully it is obvious from the name), add a space to the beginning of the name and restart with the card reader attached. If that doesn't work try changing the space to an underscore and restart.
