Maybe you can give this a try - all the newer IDE drives (those from
the last few years) have a third switch, other than Master and Slave
(I don't remember what it is called, unfortunately) that basically
says - I'll let the computer figure it out.  I would suggest
configuring your drives to that setting and give it a try.  I have 2
IDE drives in my Mac - none of them are apple drive, and I don't have
a problem mounting both.  I have one of the earlier G4 and I run
Panther and OS9.2.2 in a dual boot situation and both OS have no
problem seeing the drives.
