I have a 9 year old 17" Supermac monitor on which the screen suddenly goes to white/bright light gray with visible diagonal retrace or scan lines. Usually it does this after it's been on for at least 20 minutes but sometimes within a few minutes of boot up. Even though I can't see what I'm doing at that point, I can use keystrokes to save open docs, close windows, quit programs and shut down the 8500 G3/350 computer.

Turning the monitor off for some time (to cool?) usually allows it to come back up later. Generally, rebooting does not fix the problem although it has worked on one or two occasions making me think there's a slight chance it's the built-in video on the 8500. I am not using a video card. Seems like bad video from the computer would cause a black or dark gray screen though?

Can anyone diagnose these symptoms?

if the lines are straight or checked it is a bad vramchip or bank, or if the cursor has flickering details otherwise
if they are white lines angelled towards one corner slightly or just a little bit, it can be a broken monitor, but maybe the damage then isnt too bad, cause the tube itself is workin, maybe just some soldering or changing some resistor or so, old tv sets used to become that way - and on them this is a workable problem, BUT it could also be some other source, a tv nearby ?? another screen ??? the neighbours doing their own radiobroadcasts ??? a refrigerator or freezer close up that starts up every 20 minute or so ???
