Have you tried the sound while playing iTunes music?

My experience is limited to 10.1.5 on a 7300. However, I have no problems
with the sound with iTunes 3 and cheap external speakers. Hopefully Panther is
not a step backward.

I do remember there was/is a sound issue with OS X and unsupported Mac's but
iTunes works for me -- not muted or distorted.
