some screen that do not have adjustment nobs on the outside you have 
to open up, take off
the hood and adjust from inside, and since I never done it its not 
something that I would recomenned.
Some of them were ment to function with that thick black border. Have 
you switched the screens between
the to performas, that would tell if the problem is in the box or tube.

Well, I swapped the monitors, and the /B version monitor works just fine on
my daughter's machine. The /D version still has the smaller image with the
black border.

I don't know why two performa plus monitors that differ in version number
can't work the same.
