I'm becoming confused about something.
I have a performa PPC 6360. it can use a commslot II modem or ethernet
card. people also tell me i can pry off the mobo geoport modem and use a
56k extenal modem if i want to. My kid got a PIII PC recently. it has an
ethernet card in it now. i have a modem card i could put in it for him.
he'll be running win XP, I'll be using everything from 7.6.1 up to OS
9.1 on mine, in different startup folders and partitionioning my HD
into different OS's.
the question has to do with this dilemma: we have to pick an ISP before
aug 4th. we each have our own phone lines and phone numbers. he's a
cheapskate. I'm worried about access. we have webtv now, an MSN service.
MSN will let us add his PC to our service for no change in price, but
where does that leave me on my mac? do i need to pick my own ISP that
can handle a mac on OS 9? and dialup the net separately on my own phone
line? or can we network the two machines on ethernet and have my mac
access the net thru his PC going to his MSN?
i looked at earthlink for comparison, and their access pages seem to say
they accept four different protocols for legacy macs, from system 7 up
to OS 9. _not_ 9.1, notably.
i 'was' gonna have a guy come out and wire one of my phone jacks to my
computer desk, but now I"m wondering if we should be ethernetting the
wiring from his room to my desk instead. or if i should have the guy do
it anyway to hedge my bets.
can i use MSN on the 6360 on OS 9.1?
can i use IE and how high a version, to browse with? how bout netscape?

can i use his acess to MSN by ethernetting from my desk to his PC in his
room, out his phone line, [i assume it'll take a subnet mask?] what
other hardware will it take, besides what i have already?
CAT5 cable? crossover cable? a router? a switch? we each have one
ethernet card in our machines now. mine can only take one card.
he means to get a laptop later this year, so that'll probably come into
the network when he does.
'is the devil you know, better than the devil that you don't know?'
