I can start my 9500 (OS 9.1) from an external wide SCSI connected to a PCI.

I can start my eMac (OS 10.3.4) off an external FireWire

Holding down the C-Key goes to the CD to boot - does not need a HD

The boot volume address I believe is part of the info in PRAM

I'm not going to try it (too busy), but why not try? If it doesn't work, nothing lost

SCSI is not Firewire.

An EMac is not a legacy Mac and may have an advanced arrangement to accomplish a Firewire boot.

A CD drive is not a hard drive. If you are booted off an external CD is that accomplishing what you want to do.?
