I have OS 9.2.2 installed on a PowerMac7500 with a 604e processor in it. For reasons similar to yours, I also found it necessary to install Netscape (7.02). Compared to other web browsers, it's not unlike that elephant you mentioned - unbearably slow and ponderous. Be prepared to have your patience tested.
