It probably has somethig to do with the hub and the auto-sensing thing. Some hubs/switches can automatically figure out whether you are running a 10-base T or 100 -base T ethernet and adjust accordingly. Some can't. Try downloading the ethernet software from Apple. I don't remember what it's called, but it has something about duplex and 1/2 duplex or something like that.
