The differences:
A router splits one IP several ways, acts as a firewall, and will create a local area network for you in the process.
A switch will connect your computers directly to the DSL or CABLE modem, thus an IP for each computer will be required. I would only use a switch behind a router, as the router would assign each computer a local (non-internet) IP address. Although, you could use a switch if you want to pay a lot on your internet service provider bill.
A Hub is like a switch. You don't want one of these either. The difference being is that it echo's all the data incoming from the WAN port to all other ports - which can cause collisions and slow down your internet access - especially on more than 15 - 20 computers. While this type of equipment can be good in a large business for connecting from a switch to a hub to obtain network connectivity for a group of people, it wouldn't be efficient in your situation.
So use a router. If you need more ports that the router provides, connect the router to a switch and use the router and switch to complete your networking needs.
