I have a somewhat dumb question about power supply failures.

I have been banging my head on the desk for a couple of weeks now, trying to fix up what I thought was a simple little G3AIO machine for a friend. It has given me endless grief. It would regularly just blank out, like it went to sleep. The power light would stay on, and you could make the CD drive open or close. However, I would have to flip the switch to turn it off, then power it back on with the keyboard. It was very inconsistent in this blanking out behavior.

The monitor is crisp and clear, so I don't think it was failing. I just got a copy of TechTools Pro 4, and it gave the drive, RAM, etc a clean bill of health.

Tonight, the AIO appears to have died. Nothing but a click when you turn it on.

My questions about power supplies is, do they go out abruptly or do they kind of flake out a little first? The only true hardware failure I have ever experienced was a monitor.

Other forms of speculation welcome. I guess I would like to learn something from this besides how to regularly reinstall the software on a flaky system.

Nancy
