What do you exactly mean by hybrid DIMMs? DIMMs that can work either at 3.3v and 5v? or just something else? That is EXACTLY what I mean. Think about the typcal 168-pin DIMMs that you have seen used in PCI Macs. The word for them is "chunky."Alejandro.
Skinny memory versus chunky is usually a sign of memory built later in the life span of that style of memory. I've got some 8Mb DIMMs with massive chips and some 128Mb DIMMs where the chips aren't much thicker than the traces. You can't tell a lot by the number or size of chips, other than their age maybe.
When you're using memory of unknown type be careful when inserting them. FPM & EDO DIMMS have a connector that is close to PC66/100/133 style memory. There is a notch that is in a slightly different position. It's rather a poor design that the newer memory didn't use a slot another .2" away to make it clear. I've never done it but I think you could force a DIMM into the wrong slot if you're not careful.
I purchased some 168-pin DIMMs that look just like the usual 5v FPM 168-pin DIMMs but they probably weigh about half as much. All of the chips on both sides of the DIMM are very, very thin. I'm away from home right now so I can't pop one out of the 9600 to check but I'm sure that they say 3.3v right on them, run at 60ns, and are designated IDT 74FCT 162244 APA.
I'm not sure but I think there were some late model 5V DIMMs that use 3.3V chips with appropriate power supply and interface chips. It's done because the 3.3V chips are sufficiently cheaper to offset the other hardware cost. This is especially true when a memory chip's price starts rising near the end of it's production life and the DIMMs are still selling well.
