Find an ACARD ATA/66 or better PCI card and use IDE cdroms and HD's. I have
a 44x IDE cdrom in my 8500 (G3-400) and it runs just fine and is bootable
(some are not do some research).

The only common SCSI cdrom are probably 32x Plextors and they cost more then
a cheap IDE drive these days and cannot be found new (try eBay).
