When you're using memory of unknown type be careful when inserting them. FPM & EDO DIMMS have a connector that is close to PC66/100/133 style memory. There is a notch that is in a slightly different position. It's rather a poor design that the newer memory didn't use a slot another .2" away to make it clear. I've never done it but I think you could force a DIMM into the wrong slot if you're not careful.
It can definitely be done. I have a 9600 motherboard here that a fellow sent me after one of the DIMM sockets melted. He sent me the offending DIMM as well, and examination showed that the DIMM he inserted which smoked the motherboard was an SDRAM (PC66/100/133) DIMM.
As Clark writes, the notch on an SDRAM DIMM is just offset about the width of the notch and it is possible to force an SDRAM DIMM into a non-S DRAM slot.
