After reading threads on 7300/8600/9600 power supply issues is the above conversion feasible?
The Beige G3 can use a standard ATX power supply if you set the relevant jumper on the MB properly. The MT G3s use what amounts to an ATX PS, so the jumper is set properly on them. The DT G3s use a slightly different PS, so you must change the jumper setting on the DT G3.
I'm not sure if an ATX power supply will physically fit nicely in an 8600 case or not, but surely, with the variety of ATX supplies out there, one can be made to fit.
Next question: the 8600-200 mobo is compatible pin-compatibloe only with a 7300 PS. Can regular 7500/7600 PS pinouts be rearranged so it becomes compatible with the 8600's mobo?
The connectors which plug into the motherboard are different between the two styles of PS for the x500, x600 machines. However, the connectors are all standard Molex connectors. Even though they plug into the motherboard, they are called "receptacles" by Molex, because the pins, inside what looks like a plug to a normal person, are female. Hence, the plug looking thing is a receptacle, and the connector on the motherboard, which looks like a receptacle, is a plug.
You can find pinouts for the various power supplies in the articles at <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com> . There are a couple of articles on converting ATX power supplies to use on x500 and x600 machines, and naturally, those include the PS pinouts for the x500 and x600 machines, respectively. So, all that should be necessary is to remove the old connectors/receptacles from the old power supply and attach the proper new connector with the pins arranged properly in the connector.
I've never had any luck extracting the pins from the connectors intact, so I prefer to just cut the wires flush with the old connector and crimp on new pins to be inserted in the new connector. This is tedious.
The connectors in question are the "Mini-Fit Jr." line from Molex. Digi-Key has them and the part numbers are WM3700-ND through WM3711-ND depending on how many pins in the connector. The Molex part numbers are 39-01-2020 through 39-01-2240 in increments of 20.
Ten pin is WM3704-ND/39-01-2100, twelve pin is WM3705-ND/39-01-2120, twenty-two pin is WM3710-ND/39-01-2220 and twenty-four pin is WM3711-ND/39-01-2240, which are the relevant ones for Mac PS conversions. Incidentally, the ATX connector is the 20 pin Mini-Fit Jr. receptacle.
Pins to clamp onto the wires and go into the housings (the connectors are just empty plastic housings) are WM2501-ND/39-00-0039 for the female pins.
