I usually get a whirring sound on the two Jaz drives that work(out of total 
of 4). and it takes 20-30 secs. for the disk to mount.  But a noise "like it's 
going to take off" doesn't sound good.

Only thing I can suggest is make sure the disk is in there firmly.  Perhaps 
insert the disk as you're starting up to see if it'll mount then.  I have a 
feeling the drive may be shot, I'm sorry to say.  You also might try mounting 
that disk with someone else's(confirmed working) drive, if possible, to make 
certain it's not the disk that's at fault.
