Well, in case anyone is interested.  After HP said to try the restore again,
ugh, but not install SP-2, due to problems HP has experienced, I pulled the
drive from the 6500 and so far the damn Windoze thing is working.  So I
guess the drive wasn't damaged.

Thanks for the info on the max HD size in the 6500, I didn't know about that
limit.  Though I am going to be putting an ATA controller in my 9600 so the
6500 probably won't be getting a drive that big in the near future.
