There is little point in itself in using USB for the keyboard. But the best optical mice are USB and these are a great leap forward... I expect that if a port is taken up for a mouse, then a USB keyboard that daisy-chains a mouse off it would not be any further burden on the ports - but there is probably no need for the USB keyboard and in fact is an inelegance since as Saul explains you should have a normal keyboard and mouse around anyway.
