Well, defrag it because this can cause inefficiencies - files written or
space set aside (like for VM and other working HD scratch areas) have to be
found space a bit here, a bit there, and then when called upon, have to be
read from here and there and everywhere. I don't think all versions (at
least) of "Techtool" have this. Norton's Utilities does have this facility.
If you want to do without special software for this, I guess you can back up
all your HD and use drive setup to wipe all and put the individual files and
folders back...

About this ghost HD (you now reveal... :), an excellent reason to do what
others have advised and open the case. First thing to do is check to see if
it it spins when you power up, feel it, listen close. Anyway just note this
for possible future use, and then disconnect it completely, remove power and
data cable. You need to eliminate any possible trouble of your machine being
preoccupied with this malfunctioning unit.

About Techtools saying your RAM is good. Can you trust it? What tests did
you ask it to do and how long did the tests take. If a few mins, forget
about it. Try Gauge Pro (free on web) for over 1500 iterations... And then
there are some little things to watch for (the test cannot test the parts of
the RAM where the system is loaded) so you need to move the sticks about to
eliminate for this...

Get Techtool Lite (or even the Techtool Pro you might have) up on screen,
what specific difficulty do you have? It quits all apps, takes a snap of a
few things, throws out the old desktop file and restarts and rebuilds a new
one... It has been claimed that the built in Apple function of "holding down
the command + option" when starting is not the best because it can
incorporate trouble from the desktop it is rebuilding, Techtools claims to
throw the old one out and give you a new one.
