I bought a ViewSonic VGA monitor several years ago to replace a failed Apple MultiScan15. It came with an adapter with several DIP type switches to set for various monitors/computers. I think most of the "switchless" adapters were/are for older Macs with limited video capability. I would suggest hunting up a more flexible adapter. Try the lem-swap list for cheapter options.
A lot of the adapters either included with monitors or shipped after you mail or call were switch-less. They typically were specific to the monitor meaning that the highest monitor resolution they supported was what the monitor could do on a Mac. Most of the switch-less adapters I've seen have been this type rather than for older single resolution monitors. Single resolution monitors weren't that common and as can be seen the adapters aren't all that useful. Most of the multi-resolution switch-less adapters I've seen have the supported resolutions marked on them, but not all.
IIRC my ViewSonic has a switch-less adapter. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting
