I'm not too familiar with SCSI's so bear with me here if my questions sound
a bit elementary. I have a 9500 and for the life of me I'm having headaches
trying to attach an 18GB hard drive (80pin w/a 50/60 pin adapter) to it.
This hard drive would be the only hard drive on the system. I also wanted
to attach a Toshiba 40X CD-ROM drive to it (50 pin).
80 pin SCSI devices can not be terminated which can create problems on Mac SCSI busses. The ends of the SCSI must be terminated. The controller end is typically terminated on the controller, while the user is responsible for terminating the other end.
In the case of using the adapted 80 pin hard drive and a 50 pin CD ROM. the CD ROM will need to be on the end of the cable and it will need to be terminated. Sometimes a single device will work if it is on a very short cable to the controller. It is not good practice to leave the end connector on a cable open. The last device on the ribbon cable should be in the last plug.
On Macs the SCSI controller provides termination power to the buss. Generally no device will need to have termination power enabled, however in cases where a long cable is used it might be necessary to enable termination power on the last device. 80 pin SCSI devices can not be terminated and also can not provide termination power.
The normal path on an 8500(?) is from the MB to the CD to the hard drive. That would cause a problem because the last device your hard drive, can not be terminated. Terminators are made for such instances are made. You could also look into rerouting the cable, or sticking another device on the end. A Zip drive for instance could be used to end the chain, they are cheap and small enough to be dropped inside the case if you do not wish to use it.
