You are welcome.

Ron,

Thanks for taking the time to give me such a detailed response. After
weighing the options and the needs I've come to the conclusion that the
machine will stay as it is, and whether or not it stays here or goes on to
find another Mac lover will be decided later.

Thanks for the help.

David

Hi David,

The LC575 is a little different than the LC580. Actually it's a better
Mac as OEM in my opinion as it has the Sony CRT. I originally wanted to
use a LC575 for my project but decided against it for several reasons.
I found a LC 580 first locally anyway for $15.00 so my decision was
easy.
The SCSI IDE issue can be fixed by swapping the internal logic board
connector and wiring harness but if you've ever taken one apart you
would decide against that. The all-in-ones were not made to come apart
easily.

The CD-ROM is SCSI on the LC so if you could make a patch ribbon cable
to add another SCSI device I assume it would work but I could be wrong.
You could add an external drive possibly but that's assuming the board
will work in the 575 without a problem.

I would say there is a good chance the 6500 board just won't work or
will act very funky. And if it did work there is also another possible
issue with the PCI bus. The non-PCI Macs do not have the needed voltage
to run the PCI slots like the 54/55/64/6500 logic boards have. The
LC580 I have has no PCI cards in it because I decided I didn't really
need any and it may cause a problem with the power supply.

I have put 5500 boards in several of the desktop Macs like the
62/6300's but they also have the IDE drives so that wasn't a problem
but the SCSI probably would be.

The 575 board is a common upgrade for the Color Classic and there are
some really impressive CC hacks that would also apply to your LC575
since it's compatible. Check out these links:

PowerCC/

There may be a LC575 hack on this page somewhere:

There may be another way to max the performance in your LC575 but it
may not be worth the time and costs. It's fun to try anyway.

Good Luck,

Ron

OK,

I have a couple of older LC type machines kicking around and until I
read
this post and the LC580 project page below I was at a loss as to what
to do
with them. Now I'm wondering if I can put a 6500/250 board into the
LC575.
Any issues? I asked on the LEM swap list for a board and it was
mentioned
that there's the issue that the LC575 is SCSI and the 6500/250 board
is IDE.
I hadn't realized that initially. So now my questions are:

Will a 6500/250 fit in an LC575?

I'm guessing I'd actually need to swap out the HD for an IDE apple
drive,
yes? Any recommendations?

What about the CD drive and the floppy?

I'm becoming suspicious that this might not warranty the effort and
expense.
Any comment?

Thanks for any input,

Correct, the 6360 will upgrade with a 55/6500 board up to 300MHz from
the 6500's.
I think the 6360 is basically a 54/6400 in a desktop case.

Actually the 62/6300 series of Macs can use a 64/6500 & 54/5500 logic
boards but there is a power problem when using PCI slot cards.
If you don't add a PCI card you can upgrade alot of the old Power Macs
with the 55/6500 boards. I have a Performa 638CD with a 5500 board in
it and an
LC580 all-in-one with a 5500 board in it.

what I can upgrade this machine to (besides RAM -

8.1 or .6, not sure which).

Hard Disk for a start, it's standard IDE so you can attach any cheap
drive
that you pick up from your local computing store, provided that it's
less
than or up to about 120GB. I'd look on eBay for cheap 10GB or so
drives.

Logic Board? It slides right out the back - look for a board from a
5500/6500 which will give you speed of up to 300MHz and that extra
1MB of
video RAM which helps the 5xxx display hugely.

CD-Rom drive... Yours is probably 4x or 8x... This can be upgraded,
just
make sure you get a 50-pin SCSI one! I have no idea why the HDD is
IDE and
the CD-Rom is SCSI but it is, lol, eBay again!

TV Card? FM Card?

Oh the possibilities! Upgrade to 8.6 BTW, IMHO it's better and run's
fine on
your machine.

Phil
