The Beige G3 motherboard was "printed" for both. Immediately to the right of the ZIF socket, you will find an area labeled "CACHE". It is for a 168 pin socket which would have held the cache had that cache not been included on the ZIF on every Beige. Which is why every Beige ZIF sticks out to the right and has two chips, which total either 512 Kbytes or 1024 kbytes. (Also notice right under the 20-pin header which is used for the floppy is a "printed" area which would have held a 34-pin header, which in turn would have been used for a standard PC type floppy drive, in place of the custom Mac type floppy drive which was actually used in all machines). So, the designers of the Beige were hedging their bets on two fronts: cache type (on motherboard or on ZIF) and floppy type (PC type or Mac type). The power connector, usually labeled P8, which is on the Beige MT power supply's cabling, and a similar, but different designation on the Beige DT power supply's cabling, would have been used to power that PC type floppy, had that actually been implemented. As is was, that connector was used to power the SCSI Zip drive, after it was discovered that the Rev. 1 ROM could not support Slave drives. When the Rev. 2 ROMs came out, and the Zip could finally be an EIDE drive, that connector became redundant on all counts (not needed for a PC floppy and not needed for a SCSI Zip), but it was retained anyway. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
