Is anyone using a PCI PowerMac in conjunction with an external 5 1/4" floppy
drive? Someone is trying to transfer old Appleworks files from floppies
This comes up once in a while. I have done this sort of thing for a couple of folks on various LEM lists. To do the job, I keep an Apple IIgs with both 5 1/4 and 3.5 inch drives attached. Put the 5 1/4 floppies in, move the files to the 3.5s, insert the 3.5s into my 6500 with burner attached, burn the files to CDs. You can put a BUNCH of 5 1/4 floppies onto one CD.
As far as I know there are NO 5 1/4 drives for any Mac. Connecting one to a Mac's floppy port is inviting "smoke."
This is more a point of trivia than anything else, but Apple did make a 5 1/4 floppy drive for the Mac. I have the drive but I do not have the controller card. The drive is called Apple PC 5.25 Drive. I could be gotten with a NuBus card controller or a controller card for the SE/30 PDS slot.
I do not even know if it reads ProDOS disks. It was part of an early PC translation package for System 6 and was supported by SoftPC emulation software. At one point Mr. Cantrell who I believe is a member of the list had a controller card for it.
