my 9500/180 SMP and samba for my daughter's PC, my Win XP notebook, and my dual-boot FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE/Windows XP Pro workstation. Printing is via a couple of ink-jet printers, an Epson 800 attached to my daughter's PC and an HP G85 running off an HP JetDirect box; high volume is handled by an HP 4si with PostScript and Mac support to which the Macs talk directly over EtherTalk v2.
I use FreeBSD primarily because I am more comfortable with the BSD approach to distribution (sources only) and documenation.
Since the Macs and PCs both have server access, it's easy to move physical files; I have had less luck with file conversion, since one of the Macs is an old IIx running 7.1 and I haven't figured out yet how to get the fonts to convert properly.
The NAT box talks to a cable modem via 10Mbit Ethernet, and to an old 3Com SSII 3000 10/100 switch on the second port. I use this environment primarily for historical reasons (got started with UN*X a long time ago) and because I use the house server for Mac and Windows backups.
An inexpensive router/switch, possibly with WiFi, is pretty cheap and a lot easier to set up and use, however.
