I have a US Robotics external 56k modem attached to my 8500. Until this morning it was working fine. But i came to connect to the net this morning and it wont dial out when Appletalk is set to connect via modem port. I've only managed to dial up, my setting it to remote only.
Does anyone have any idea's whats happened?
The PPP module in the TCP/IP stack simply cannot talk to the modem port when AppleTalk has a death grip on it. Those two networking stacks just won't share serial ports, period.
"Remote Only" is a misnomer, btw; it's AppleTalk-speak for "loopback". It's purpose it to allow AppleTalk to run without occupying any ports at all. That, in turn, lets you enable File Sharing and its file protection schema - which is needed when you use various server softwares, etc.
The real question is: why was AppleTalk pointing at that port suddenly? If you didn't make that change, then perhaps your PRAM battery is dying (the PRAM says which port AppleTalk is pointed to upon boot).
IF you didn't change the setting intentionally/accidentally then: Short term fix: Zap your PRAM, then reset your AppleTalk port, Startup Drive, etc. Long term fix: Replace the battery.
