Well, to answer my own question from 11-18-04: apparently not! I stuck the drive on the old Zip sled in the top bay, & the 6500 wouldn't recognize it, even after booting 4 or 5 times, each time checking that the adapter was fully plugged into it, & the power & SCSI cables into the adaptor, & no ID conflicts, but no go! I could hear the drive spinning up.
The drive plus adapter works fine in an old APS external box (with built-in "digital active termination"), and a 50-pin Quantum Fireball works fine in the same top bay, so it's probably that the terminator block is not an "active" 1, as the manual from Seagate says it has to be for the LVD drive to run correctly in SE mode -- at least that's my theory so far. > Wondering about the advisiblity of placing a Seagate Cheetah ST39102LC 9.1 > LVD/SE drive in a Power Mac 6500's uppermost drive bay, with regard to the air > flow, power draw, bus issues. The developer's manual pdf calls it a "positive" terminator; I > hope that's not a typo for "passive" ;) .... > > Thanks in advance. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
