Since the lost of 5 MHz of the bus speed, when upgrading the CPU,
there will be some knid of lost as well.
For example, a 400 MHz upgrade for a 50 MHz bus speed will now become
360 MHz. A lost of 40 MHz.
Does any one own a 7300/180 with upgraded CPU, and tried to overclock the speed?
Is it possible to set the speed to 9x (the CPU to 405 MHz)? I heard
that the maximun is only 8x. Is this true?
What else can I speed it up? Change the cache ratio? Right now it is
3:1. How fast will it be if I change it to 2:1?
It would help if you explained what you are doing or planning on doing.
A 400MHz would typically run at 8:1 for a Bus speed of 50MHz.
The bus speed of this vintage of computers is 50MHz...Maximum. The processor to bus ratio is always an integer or integer + .5, ie. 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 and so on. Your 180 MHz uses a 4:1 divider so the bus runs at 45 MHz. Old 8500/120s run a bus speed of 40MHz. Unless you are doing something more dependent on bus speed than processor (like video capture) a drop in bus speed is worth it for an increase in processor speed.
The maximum for a G3 is 9:1 but I don't know if that's true for all G3s.
A 2:1 cache is faster by quite a bit than a 3:1. But if you change the cache ratio and the cache isn't up to it you'll have crashes. Note that it may work at first but it may cause problems later particularly with a change in temperature.
