Have you tried resetting PRAM? Techtool is probably the best way to do
this.

Thanks for the replies (the several); sorry for the lag.

I did zap the PRAM deeply, 7 or 8 chimes. I am not sure that TechTool does much more than that.

I have zapped the pram more than 16 times to delete it completely. And Yes TechTool does something extra. especially when rebuilding the desktop,

The unit has lost it's time/date when I first booted, but it is holding it now. It has been plugged in for a few days, I'll try again and see if the charge (date) holds.

I do not recall seeing "write 0's" or similar options in Disk Utility on the 8.5 CD (whatever it's called), but I did replace the disk driver.

well then probably you did not low level format the drive at all and impurities in the file tree might still be there, you must check theese options to make any kind of low level format. a low level format can take several hours.
(on a scsi disk) it s situated in the alternativ menu, since I dont have the english version of the disk tool, I do not know the exact phrase

I have not tried a Norton low level scan, I can do that. I still need to see if I can find which extension (if any one) is making the finder die. I'd be a little surprised if it is a HD error though, given that it persisted across a reformat- that bad spot should have a different file on it, or maybe even got mapped out (only if a write failed I guess, read could still be bad).

some times there are 2 or more extensions that makes the same error and then they get hard to sort out.
