My simplistic view ...
A digital monitor is best, if you have digital (DVI) output. Few, if any PCI Macs have w/o add-on video card.
If you have VGA (analog) port you can use any PV monitor with VGA input. If only Macintosh video out, need a 'converter' to do so - readily available.
The players have changed over the years, so many old-time monitor mfrs are gone.
Most PC magazines have frequent monitor reviews - available on their web sites.
Key things
- brightness
- contrast ratio
- refresh rate (faster - below 15ms - prevents 'ghosting')
- pixel pitch (close to .25 is good)
- resolution (LCD's have ONE native resolution where screen is best - unlike CRTs)
(and a 'larger' screen may not mean greater resolution - only larger pixels)
.
I use a 17" Samsung (now a major monitor mfr) 712N (VGA only),
which CompUSA was recently promoting at @ $330 plus tax.
(I paid $380 earlier in the year)
There's also a similar 19" 912N, but specs are not as good,
and resolution is the same - 1280 x 1024
More than happy with it after 6+ months ... not a single 'bad' pixel. ----------------------------------------------- Brightness (Typical) 300 cd/m2 Contrast Ratio 600:1 Response Time (ms) 12 Pixel Pitch (mm) 0.264 Resolution 1280 x 1024 Aspect Ratio 4:3 Viewing Angle (H/V) 160/140(degrees) Interface Analog
Frequency Horiz. Rate (kHz) 30-81 (Analog) Vert. Rate (Hz) 56-75 Bandwidth (Mhz) 135 -----------------------------------------------

Anyway, I'm thinking LCD now, but I'm afraid I haven't kept up with the industry,
& have no idea what to look for, or what the ins & outs & things to avoid are.
I don't have any Macs with DVI output, would that be a problem with a modern LCD screen?
I assume I want an active matrix...do they even make passive any more?
What's a good price for a 17"?
Can I use a monitor meant for a PC?
Is it worthwhile looking on eBay?
Do they ship well (that is, are they fragile?)
It's back to square 1 on these things, as far as my knowledge goes,
so any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
